All right, I will say it. I never played Diablo 1 or Diablo 2. It is not because that I tried them and didn't like them. It is because I heard how much of a mouse click fest they were. So I decided to avoid them. I got a repetitive stress injury (RSI) from playing too much WarCraft II (as well as a bad ergonomic setup at work) so I was not going to chance it with these titles.
After twelve long years, Diablo 3 is finally here. Because I signed up for Blizzard's Annual Pass, I got Diablo 3 for free. So I decided to try it. Oh man, I cannot play that game for more than 10 to 15 minutes before my mouse hand starts cramping. I guess this is what they mean by a mouse click fest. As I am playing, I keep wondering why they only offer the mouse and a few keyboard commands as the only input method.
To my thinking, this game would be so much better with a gamepad. Yes, I know not that many people have them for their PCs, but this game cries out for them. The 95% mouse controls seem a bit archaic. It is so focused on clicking that you both click to move and click to attack which requires you to do unusual things like hold the Shift key down if you want to attack but NOT move.
If I were designing the control scheme for a gamepad, here is how I would do it.
Left Stick = Movement
Right Stick = Firing Direction (optionally fire primary ability)
Triggers = Firing Primary and Secondary abilities
A, B, X, Y Buttons = 1-4 Skill abilities
To me, this is so much more intuitive. Plus, it is so much more comfortable. I am sure there are fans from Diablo 1 and 2 that want the exact same mouse and keyboard control scheme released for those games. But for a title that has been in development for so long, one would think they could easily introduce an optional and potentially better control scheme. What do you think? Would you prefer a different control scheme?
