Beware Free Analytics

I just read an interesting article on the Webtrends blog called Indifference to Privacy and Data Ownership Could Cost You $.  It basically makes the point to beware free analytics since they tend to use your data and market other services (potentially competing) to your customers.  With many free services, you are not paying in money, you are "paying in user data".  If you are interested in analytics, I strongly suggest you check out the post.

As you shop around for a package or services for game analytics, you will undoubtedly come across free analytics services.  The key question to ask yourself is "why is it free".  I have seen game analytics services that offer a free plan that acts as a player feeder to the companies that pay.  In that instance, you are getting your analytics in exchange for diverting your users attention.  Other services do offer free analytics but once you pass a certain volume you get a big jump in cost.  In this case, I assume the paid tiers are paying more to be able to support the free plan.  Just be aware of the old adage, you get what you pay for.
